Galvanic plating of aluminum (Al)

In galvanization, an electrolyte is deployed as the electrically conductive liquid that electro-chemically separates metals into metallic and metallized work pieces.

 

Watery solutions of salts of the metal with which the work piece is to be coated are used. The objective of galvanization is to protect the surface of the materials from corrosion while simultaneously increasing their wear and tear resistance.

 

Aluminum galvanization – functional patterns and process sequence

A pure metallic surface is required to be able to galvanize aluminum, to achieve a high level of quality and strong adhesion of the plating. Hence, thorough pretreatment or surface cleaning is required. Dirt, oil and other impurities must be thoroughly removed. Roughness, pores in the surface as well as soilage of the base material are highly problematic. The necessary cleaning may be done by mechanical means, e.g. by pressure washing, and chemically, for instance by staining.
