Rudolf Clauss GmbH & Co. KG:

Information for neighbors and the public pursuant to § 8a Störfall-Verordnung.

Status: January 2022
Document ID: IMS0-8809878-8

The Rudolf Clauss GmbH & Co. KG operates modern galvanic plating systems in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany and is subject to the German Emergency Incident Regulation (Störfall-Verordnung - 12. BImSchV.) The announcement pursuant to § 7 Sect. 1 Störfall-Verordnung  has been submitted to the competent government agency (District Government Düsseldorf).

The term galvanic technology refers to the electro-chemical separation of metallic precipitation (coatings) on substrates (objects).

The Störfall-Verordnung requires low level operators (formerly those who have to comply with the basic obligations = Grundpflichten) that handle dangerous goods to provide their neighbors with information pursuant to § 8a in combination with Annex V Störfall-Verordnung on the safety measures and proper conduct in the event of an incident.

In this context, it is the objective of the Störfall-Verordnung to reduce the risks and dangers of industrial incidents for the public and the environment, plus to protect neighbors from dangers that could arise in process technical systems.

Hence, we are briefing you on the safety measures and the proper conduct in the event of incidents. If such an incident should nevertheless unexpectedly arise, this information will help you determine how to properly act in the event of any incident.

About the company

As a medium-sized family-operated business now under the management of the third generation, we combine the trade of galvanization with ultra-modern technology today.

Our competencies

We operate modern galvanic systems to apply a wide range of coatings! In Mülheim an der Ruhr – in the heart of the Ruhr Region – we offer the most important galvanic technology processes, including galvanic silver or zinc plating. We are committed to providing a comprehensive service spectrum from a single source.

This guarantees that we use concisely the technology that is optimal for the product.

Moreover, our constantly further developed, powerful system technology ensures that we can respond extremely flexibly and quickly to the widest array of demands, attain the highest possible throughput and deliver guaranteed, consistent quality.

Materials according to the Störfall-Verordnung

We handle primarily the following materials at our facility: cyanidin and acidic metal compounds and dangerous goods (chrome, nickel, cobalt, copper)

Markings required by the GHS:

GHS 06:    acute toxicity
GHS 07:    irritating, sensibilizing, specifically target organ toxic
GHS 08:    health hazard
GHS 09:    hazardous to the aquatic environment

If operated properly, the mentioned materials do not pose any hazards.

Potential incidents with external impact

In the event of a fire, smoke gas that may reach beyond the plant premises in the direction of the wind may develop. Smoke gases contain combustion products, such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water, soot and also, in some cases, components that have not been completely combusted. The materials used based on Annex 1 of the Störfall-Verordnung as such are not combustible.

A leakage in the production facilities may cause liquids to be dispersed. The materials (in the event of a fire also the water used to extinguish the fire) are held back in special catching cups. If the used materials leak, the release of gases or vapors that lead to a fire or an explosion is definitely not possible.

Unforeseen events (improper operation) could cause a fire and result in the emission of materials into the environment (water, soil). However, this can be reasonably ruled out thanks to ultra-modern systems, machines and safety technology. The safety of our employees and neighbors is our highest priority in both, the operation of our treatment systems and the handling of dangerous goods.

And if something happens regardless of these precautions?

We would like to assure you that due to our comprehensive safety precautions, the probability of occurrence of an incident can be assessed as very low. However, if an unforeseeable incident should arise, our measures set forth in the Alarm and Risk Defense Plan that have been coordinated with the agency and the fire department are deployed.
In the event of an incident we promptly notify law enforcement (fire department, police, supervisory agency) via phone as well as fax (report of an operational incident).

Most recent onsite inspection: April 26 – 27, 2018

Information on the onsite inspection and the related supervision plan pursuant to § 17 Sect. 1 may be obtained from the District Government Düsseldorf at Department 53 Emission Protection – including information on system-specific environmental protection. For more information please visit
