Aluminum (Al) hard anodization

The term hard anodization describes a finishing process during which an aluminum component is dipped into a sulfuric acid electrolyte with the result of generating an aluminum oxide layer on the aluminum.

This type of finishing is also called “aluminum hard coating.”

The hard anodization process creates a hard, non-conductive and corrosion resistant layer on the aluminum, which encases the entire component and thus boosts its robustness and hardness. The aluminum transforms into pillar-like oxide cells positioned vertically from the work piece surface. The oxide layer boasts excellent atomic binding forces with the base material. The plating improves the friction as well as the wear and tear resistance of the component. The hard anodized metal also has excellent electrical insulation capabilities.

Hard anodization of aluminum – possible base materials

Aluminum and some of its alloys are compatible base materials. It is absolutely essential to stipulate the exact material on the delivery note and purchase order.
